2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 3 Sedan | priaCarNews.com : New Cars, Car Style, Car Technology, Car Reviews, Car Gadgets, Car Rental Info, Car Insurance, Car Finance, Classic Cars - BMW couldn't keep its cornerstone car away from the hybrid party much longer. With the 2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 3, the automaker brings its hybrid technology most recently seen in the 5 Series to its most popular sedan. Pairing a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder with an electric motor, the ActiveHybrid 3 will make about 335 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. Power will flow to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. On electric power alone, BMW says the ActiveHybrid 3 can run up to 2.5 miles and reach a top speed of 37 mph.
BMW hasn't estimated actual fuel economy yet, but says the ActiveHybrid 3 will use up to 12.5 percent less fuel than its gas-powered counterpart. We do know that the battery pack under the trunk floor reduces capacity to 4.2 cubic feet. Meanwhile, the ActiveHybrid 3 will look little different from the regular 3 Series sedan except for more aerodynamic wheels with a slight turbine motif.
Luxury hybrid sedans are becoming more popular, and we've seen from Infiniti's M35h that performance and high fuel economy can coexist peacefully. Given BMW's reputation, we'd expect the 2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 3 to be pretty competitive.
